Despite the phenomenal success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo’s developers continue to hold a special place for the series' classic 2D-style games. This year’s The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom may have reignited their passion for the top-down format, proving there’s still room for fresh ideas in the 2D Zelda universe.

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma, who collaborated with Grezzo to develop Echoes of Wisdom, recently shared insights with the BBC. He admitted that finding innovative concepts for the 2D format can be challenging but credited the 2024 spin-off—which centers on Zelda cloning objects to solve puzzles—with unlocking new possibilities.

“This game made me realize that there’s still a lot of potential for top-down Zelda games as well,” Aonuma said. While no plans have been confirmed, he expressed hope for a dual approach to future Zelda development. “We will continue with dynamic 3D Zeldas, but we’re also hoping to expand on these 2D top-down Zeldas.”

Since the original Game Boy, Zelda has evolved along dual trajectories: console games pushing 3D exploration boundaries and portable titles innovating with 2D mechanics. However, the Switch’s hybrid nature has shifted focus toward 3D, leaving 2D entries somewhat neglected. Aside from the multiplayer spin-off Tri Force Heroes in 2015 and the 2019 remake of Link’s Awakening, original 2D Zelda games have been scarce.

Echoes of Wisdom, however, brings new mechanics to the forefront while finally making the franchise’s titular princess a playable character. With 2.5 million copies sold in its first month, it’s clear there’s a thriving audience for this style of gameplay. Fans can only hope they won’t have to wait another decade for the next original 2D Zelda adventure.
