A Stardew Valley player recently discovered a peculiar glitch in the game's latest update, but only when the language is set to Spanish. The bug causes the beloved Hat Mouse to vanish from his usual spot. However, players can still purchase hats at the abandoned house, even if the Hat Mouse himself isn’t visible.

Compared to some past glitches—like disappearing chickens on console farms—this issue is minor, impacting only the visual charm of the Hat Mouse. Still, fans who enjoy seeing one of the game’s cutest characters might find it disappointing.

Twitter user Jason QZ brought the bug to the attention of creator Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe, in a tweet on November 10. Barone quickly acknowledged the problem, explaining it occurs only in the Spanish version of the game and assured players that a fix is on the way. While the timeline for the patch remains uncertain, Barone’s track record suggests it won’t be long—earlier this month, he released a hotfix for Version 1.6.9 just hours after its initial rollout.

The Hat Mouse glitch follows the release of Stardew Valley’s massive Version 1.6 update, which introduced a new farm type, an additional festival, and numerous items and quality-of-life improvements. Given the scope of these changes, minor bugs are understandable, especially considering Barone is the game’s sole developer. The delay between the update's PC and console launches was partly due to ironing out bugs in the more flexible PC environment, though some issues still slipped through.

Despite working on his next game, Haunted Chocolatier, Barone continues to refine and expand Stardew Valley. At PAX West 2024, he remarked that he could work on the game indefinitely, as new ideas and opportunities for improvement constantly arise. While it’s unclear what lies ahead for the 2016 farming sim, Spanish-speaking players can look forward to the return of their Hat Mouse companion in a future update.
